Roberta and Service Dog Patrick’s Story
An ATV accident that caused a spinal cord injury changed the course of Roberta Palmer’s life forever. Following her injury, Roberta underwent treatment at Baylor Scott & White Health where she learned how to use a wheelchair and effectively approach everyday obstacles she would encounter out in the world. She also learned about a powerful option that would increase her independence and her joy, thanks to a partnership between Baylor Scott & White and Canine Companions: a task-trained service dog named Patrick.
Patrick helps Roberta rely less on others, especially her husband, fostering her independence. With a loveable demeanor, Patrick retrieves everything from dropped keys to the phone, so Roberta isn’t risking a fall by reaching for items herself. Roberta can also rely on her expertly trained best friend to open and close doors and drawers.
“Patrick is a constant companion and loves to work. For him, working is like play. He has been such a joy in my life. I really love him.”
