Back-to-School with Facility Dog Chandler

Emily Moen works as a Mental Health Support SA Labrador retriever wearing a blue 'Canine Companions' vest and a black backpack sits on a polished gymnasium floor, smiling towards the camera with bleachers in the background.pecialist at Cavelero Mid High School in Lake Stevens, Washington. She interacts closely with 8th and 9th graders who are facing a wide range of struggles, making it difficult for them to access their education successfully. Since being matched with Facility Dog Chandler in February 2025, Emily has seen a profound impact in the way students are able to open up and share about the obstacles they are facing at school and in their personal lives, both mentally and emotionally.

Since beginning his work at Cavelero, Chandler has been able to support students who don’t speak English feel connected to their school. He also provides a safe environment for students experiencing trauma and abuse outside of school, and with his patience and gentle nature, helps them find the words to express how they are feeling with Emily.

Chandler has the ability to sense students’ needs based off their emotions and provide support accordingly. When a student is crying, he will approach them and do a “cover” cue, providing a comforting pressure onto their lap.  When a student is in need of a laugh, he will channel his goofy side and lift their spirits.

Emily spoke on the magic Chandler brings to the students at Cavelero. Check out the stories below!
