Carol Edwards serves as the Executive Director of the Medical Alert Dog Program at Canine Companions, bringing decades of experience in dog training, service dog program leadership, and nonprofit management.
In 1999, Carol collaborated to establish The Armstrong Project, a groundbreaking research initiative that demonstrated the potential of training service dogs to scent-identify and alert to hypoglycemic episodes in insulin-dependent diabetics. The project’s success led to the creation of Dogs4Diabetics (D4D) in 2004, where Carol served as Program Director for seven years, overseeing the training of 85 service dog teams across four western states.
Recognizing the need for diabetic alert dogs for children under 12, Carol founded Early Alert Canines (EAC) in 2010. Under her leadership, EAC provided life-changing service dogs to individuals with insulin-dependent diabetes. In 2025, EAC merged with Canine Companions, solidifying a long-time partnership and growing the impact of both organizations. At Canine Companions, Carol continues to empower families and individuals through life-saving partnerships.
