Chris Mathena first learned of Canine Companions in 2015 while undergoing treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. There, he witnessed firsthand how Canine Companions service dogs positively impacted the lives of fellow veterans undergoing similar treatments. After applying for a service dog, Chris was eventually called to attend service dog Team Training and was blessed with his Canine Companions Service Dog Wadsworth II.
Chris brings a wealth of experience from his 22-year service in the Navy, where he retired as a Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman. He currently serves as a Senior Management Analyst/Auditor for the Department of State, Office of the Inspector General. His background provides him with a unique understanding of the needs of those with service dogs at a ground level. Chris views Canine Companions as the leader and role model for other service dog organizations, considering it the top organization in the industry.
