States and Local Governments Issue Proclamations for September’s National Service Dog Month

SANTA ROSA, California –Among the 70 million Americans living with a disability, only a small fraction—16,000—benefit from the assistance of task-trained service dogs. National Service Dog Month, celebrated every September, highlights the invaluable impact that service dogs have on the lives of people with disabilities.

2025 is the 50th anniversary of Canine Companions and 50 years of service dogs. In 1975, Canine Companions created the modern service dog for people with physical disabilities. We celebrate both of these important milestones during National Service Dog Month.

Canine Companions is seeking assistance to raise awareness about service dogs and participate in engaging and educational activities. The organization is also getting recognition from state and local legislators! 

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 69 million households in the U.S. share their homes with at least one furry friend. We know that humans and canines are a perfect match.

The cities, counties and states below are officially proclaiming September as National Service Dog Month, championing service dog rights and fostering understanding about their vital role. The proclamations raise important awareness in communities about the great work of service dogs and our mission.  

Canine Companions has clients living in all 50 states and has set a goal of receiving a statewide or local proclamation from 50 states for our 50th year.
