In 2017, 20-year-old Shannon Prendergast was studying at Washington State University and volunteering as a puppy raiser for Canine Companions. While making the 5-hour drive from Pullman to Seattle with Lottie, the puppy she was raising, Shannon was killed in a horrible car accident. By some miracle, Lottie survived the accident and was adopted by Shannon’s mother, Janet Prendergast. Today, Lottie is a certified Canine Companions therapy dog, working with Janet in occupational therapy at Kokanee Elementary in Woodinville, Washington. They make a difference in kids’ lives every day.
In memory of Shannon, and to honor her dedication as a volunteer puppy raiser, a college puppy raising club was formed at Washington State University and fittingly named Prendergast Pups. Since starting in 2022, college students at Washington State University have raised 11 puppies. They continue to honor Shannon’s legacy by contributing to Canine Companions’ mission of providing enhanced independence to individuals with disabilities.
Janet spoke on the incredible impact the WSU students are making as volunteer puppy raisers for Canine Companions. Check out the stories below!
