Text Transcript – Basic Obedience Training Video

My name is James Darren. I’m an instructor here at Canine Companions for Independence. I’m working with Ramona, who’s a 20-month-old lab. And today we’re going to talk about some basic obedience and talk about some training tips. Let’s get started! In basic obedience, there are four points you want to consider. 1. Be calm and confident. You want to be the dog’s pack leader 2. Have a happy healthy relationship with your puppy. 3. Setup regular training sessions to work with your puppy and 4. Always end on success. Let’s go. Good girl. You want to adopt the characteristics of a pack leader. Dogs are little emotional lightning rods, your emotions will travel up and down the leash really quickly. They’ll know when you’re frustrated; when you’re really pleased. What a good girl! Have a healthy happy relationship with your puppy. Be ready to be training your dog to reward them for good behavior, when they’re just doing something that they do naturally. I might just take this moment to let Ramona know, “Good down, Ramona. Good girl. Good girl. Excellent. Good job. Ready. Regular training sessions are really important. It gives the dog time to practice. It gives you time to practice your skills, and it should be no more than 10 or 15 minutes. I use a little bit of kibble to either reward or to lure her into a position I want her into. But it’s important to take it out of her meals. Otherwise, we have a dog that gets a little bit overweight. And we want a healthy dog, not just a happy fat dog. There’ll be times when they’re learning and trying to figure out what you want and things might get a little stressful for them. But it’s always important to set an achievable goal, keep the whole session upbeat and successful. Teaching your dog. Let’s Go or walking on a leash. Guide your dog into a let’s go position.
