In 2021, we placed 47 service dogs with veterans, including Service Dog Bernard, paired with Omar. Bernard is specially trained in physical tasks, including anxiety and nightmare interruption to mitigate the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The benefits of having a service dog have been immensely helpful for him, even beyond the help Bernard provides for his PTSD. “I live with a lot of trauma. Bernard is amazing. He’ll put his head on my lap during moments when I have anxiety triggers or I’m disconnected. He always brings me back. With Bernard, I can feel like myself,” Omar shares.
