Canine Companions and the PenFed Foundation are partnering to spread awareness on the need for more volunteers to raise future service dogs.
Volunteer puppy raisers provide Canine Companions puppies a safe home, take them to puppy classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.
Each hour spent caring for a Canine Companions puppy is vital to its development as a future service dog. The puppy raising program provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to assist with our very important mission.

The service and facility dogs we train aren’t just the ears, hands and legs of their human partners; they’re also their best friends. Canine Companions service dogs open new opportunities and spread incredible joy. We unite people with dogs in a powerful program that leads to greater independence and confidence. Our volunteer puppy raisers make this possible.

Our mission to provide highly trained service dogs to people with disabilities FREE of charge is possible thanks to the generous gifts of our donors. You can make a monthly or one-time gift.
Our mission is made possible thanks to the thousands of volunteers who give so much. There are many opportunities available across the country.
Our service dogs are partnered with adults, children and veterans to assist with daily tasks and increase independence.
Canine Companions does have a wait list to receive a service dog. Everyone who applies to receive a service dog or to become a volunteer puppy raiser goes through an application process. We can’t guarantee the puppy you raise will be placed with a veteran or in your local community. Not all puppies make it as service or facility dogs, but many go on to work in other roles such as therapy dogs.
